Why does my EICR report mention continuity testing has failed on my earth conductor?

When your EICR report flags a failed continuity test on an earth conductor, it is telling you that the electrician tested the protective earthing wire in one or more of your circuits and found it was not working properly as a continuous connection from one end to the other. The earth conductor is the yellow and green wire you may have seen inside plug tops or behind sockets. Its job is to give fault current a safe route back to the electricity supplier's earth, which in turn causes the fuse or circuit breaker to trip quickly and disconnect the power before anyone is harmed. If that path is broken or has too much resistance, the protection fails. Common reasons this happens in UK homes include the following. Loose connections at sockets, switches, or consumer unit terminals where the earth wire has come adrift over time. Corroded or damaged earth wires, particularly in older properties with steel conduit or properties near the coast where moisture is a factor. Broken or cut earth conductors behind walls, sometimes caused by a nail or screw driven through the cable during DIY work. Missing earth connections in older wiring systems, for example properties still wired with two-core rubber or fabric cable from the 1960s or earlier, which contained no earth conductor at all. Joints made in junction boxes where the earth was not properly reconnected. This kind of fault is usually given a C2 code on your EICR, meaning it is a potentially dangerous condition that needs fixing promptly. In some cases, depending on the circuit type and location, it may be coded C1, which means danger present and the circuit should not be used until it is repaired. What you can do safely at home is very limited. You can visually check accessible socket faceplates and plug tops to see if the earth wire appears connected, but you should not probe inside consumer units or attempt any wiring work yourself. Call a qualified electrician as soon as possible. They will use a low-resistance ohmmeter to trace where the continuity is lost and repair or replace the faulty section. This is not a fault to leave, as it directly affects your safety in the event of a wiring fault.
