Can I add more sockets to my home?

Quick answer

Yes — adding sockets is one of the most common electrical jobs in the UK. It must be done by a Part P registered electrician or notified to Building Control if in certain locations.

Adding extra sockets is very common and completely legal with the right approach. In most rooms (living room, bedroom, hallway), adding a socket is relatively straightforward and typically costs £100–250 per socket depending on how far it is from existing wiring. The work must either be done by a Part P registered electrician (who self-certifies the work) or, if you do it yourself, notified to your local Building Control before starting. The exception is kitchens — any new socket in a kitchen counts as notifiable work regardless of who does it. Adding a fused spur (a permanently wired connection) from an existing socket is simpler than running a new circuit. If you have no existing sockets nearby, a new dedicated circuit from the consumer unit is needed, which adds cost. Never daisy-chain multiple extension leads permanently — this is a fire risk.
