Finding water inside your consumer unit (fuse box) is a serious issue that must be treated as an emergency. Electricity and water are a dangerous combination and can cause electric shock, fire, or damage to your wiring.
Most Common Causes
Condensation on metal tails — The thick cables (meter tails) entering your consumer unit from the electricity meter are often uninsulated metal. In cold weather, warm moist air inside the cupboard or hallway can condense on the cold metal and drip into the unit.
Roof or ceiling leak — Water from a leaking pipe, roof, or bathroom above can track down the wall or along cables directly into the unit.
Rising or penetrating damp — In older properties, damp walls can allow moisture to migrate into surface-mounted consumer units.
Condensation inside the meter cupboard — External meter boxes often lack adequate ventilation seals, allowing cold, damp air inside.
What You Can Safely Check
Look, don't touch. Visually inspect the area around the consumer unit without opening it.
Check if the meter tails pipe or cable entry point shows signs of moisture or rust staining.
Look above the unit for water staining on the ceiling or wall.
Check if the meter box outside is damp or has gaps where cold air enters.
What You Must NOT Do
Do not open the consumer unit — parts inside are always live, even with the main switch off.
Do not attempt to dry it with a hairdryer or cloth.
Do not reset tripped breakers — they may have tripped for a reason related to the moisture.
When To Call an Electrician
Call a registered electrician (NICEIC, NAPIT, or SELECT registered) immediately. This is not a DIY repair. The electrician will need to isolate the supply, inspect for damage, carry out insulation resistance tests, and establish the source of the moisture before the unit can be safely used again.
