Why is my neutral wire overheating?

What the neutral wire does The neutral wire completes the electrical circuit, carrying current back to the supply. In a healthy installation it should carry roughly the same current as the live wire, and a well-made connection will barely warm up. Most common reasons it overheats Loose or corroded terminal — the most frequent cause. A poor connection creates resistance, and resistance turns electrical energy into heat. Overloaded circuit — too many appliances drawing more current than the cable was designed for. Undersized neutral conductor — occasionally found in older properties where wiring does not meet modern standards. Shared or floating neutral — in older ring-main wiring or where DIY work has been carried out, neutrals from different circuits can be incorrectly shared. Three-phase imbalance — in properties with a three-phase supply, an open-circuit neutral can force full phase-to-phase voltage onto equipment and cause severe overheating.
