Why is my neutral wire at the fuse box glowing red when nothing is switched on?

Quick answer

A neutral wire glowing red at the fuse box is a serious warning sign, most commonly caused by a loose or corroded neutral connection creating high resistance and heat. This can also indicate an overloaded neutral conductor or a lost neutral from the supply. Turn off your main switch immediately and do not restore power until a qualified electrician has inspected the installation. This is a fire and electrocution risk. Do not touch the wire or attempt any investigation yourself.

Finding a neutral wire glowing red inside your fuse box, even when nothing is switched on, is genuinely alarming and you are right to be concerned. It means that wire is getting dangerously hot, and heat inside an electrical panel is always a serious safety issue. What is actually happening is that electricity is still flowing through the neutral even when your switches are off. This is normal to a small degree, but when the wire glows red it means far more current is passing through than that wire can safely handle, or the connection itself is so poor that even a small current is generating significant heat. The most common causes are: 1. A loose neutral terminal at the neutral bar inside the consumer unit. A poor connection creates resistance, and resistance generates heat. 2. A corroded or damaged neutral conductor making poor contact. 3. An overloaded neutral, which can happen when the neutral is shared across multiple circuits and the load is unbalanced. 4. A lost or broken neutral from the DNO supply cable, which can cause voltages across your installation to behave unpredictably and push current back through unusual paths. 5. A wiring fault elsewhere in the property causing current to find an alternative return path through the neutral. What you should do right now: Turn off the main switch at the top of your consumer unit. This is the large switch, usually at the top left or top right of the board. Do not simply turn off individual circuits and assume that is enough. Do not open the consumer unit cover, do not touch any wires, and do not try to tighten any connections yourself. Even with the main switch off, the cables coming into the consumer unit from the street remain live and cannot be isolated by you. Call a registered electrician immediately. Look for someone registered with NICEIC, NAPIT, or another Part P competent person scheme. Explain what you saw and that the situation is urgent. If you could smell burning or see any scorch marks, call the fire brigade on 999 before anything else. This is not a fault you should leave and return to later. A glowing neutral wire is a genuine fire risk.
