Why is my neutral conductor overheating in the fusebox?

Why Is My Neutral Conductor Overheating in the Fusebox? Finding a hot, discoloured, or burning-smelling wire in your fusebox (consumer unit) is alarming — and rightly so. The neutral conductor (usually the blue wire in modern UK installations, or black in older ones) carries return current back from your appliances to the supply. If it overheats, something has gone wrong and the risk of fire or electric shock is real. What Does It Actually Mean? The neutral wire should carry roughly the same current as the live (line) conductor. When it overheats, it means too much current is flowing through a path that cannot handle it safely. This builds up heat — and heat in an enclosed consumer unit can ignite surrounding materials. Common Causes You Should Know About Loose or corroded terminal: The single most common cause. A poor connection creates resistance, which creates heat even at normal current levels. Overloaded circuit: Running too many appliances on one circuit forces more current than the cable is rated for.
