Why is my electrical panel showing signs of burning plastic smell when it is cold?
Quick answer
A burning plastic smell from your electrical panel, especially in cold weather, most commonly indicates overheating connections, failing components, or insulation breakdown under thermal stress. Cold temperatures can cause metal components to contract, worsening already loose connections and increasing resistance, which generates heat. Turn off the main switch immediately and do not use the panel until a qualified electrician has inspected it. This is a serious fire risk and should be treated as an emergency.
🏠Homeowner view
A burning plastic smell coming from your consumer unit or fuse board is never something to ignore, and the fact that it happens or worsens in cold weather gives us an important clue about what might be going wrong.
Why cold weather makes it worse
Electrical connections are made from metal, and metal contracts when temperatures drop. If any connections inside your panel are already slightly loose, the cold makes them contract further, creating tiny gaps. Electricity trying to pass through a poor connection generates heat, and that heat is what burns the plastic insulation around wires and components. You may notice the smell more on cold mornings or after a cold night for exactly this reason.
What could be causing it
The most common causes include loose or corroded terminal connections on circuit breakers or the main isolator, a circuit breaker that is beginning to fail internally, overloaded circuits where cables are running hotter than they should, damaged or degraded cable insulation inside or near the panel, and in older properties, a consumer unit that is simply past its safe working life.
What you should do right now
Do not open the consumer unit yourself. The internal components carry live voltages that can be lethal even with the main switch off. Do not ignore the smell hoping it will go away. Do not reset any tripped breakers without understanding why they tripped. If the smell is strong, you see scorch marks, or you see any discolouration around the panel cover, treat this as an emergency.
If the smell is faint and intermittent, turn off non-essential circuits at the individual breakers and call a registered electrician as soon as possible, today if you can. If the smell is strong, continuous, or accompanied by any visible signs of burning, turn off the main switch and call an emergency electrician immediately. In the worst case, if you suspect active burning inside the panel, leave the property and call 999.
What an electrician will do
A qualified electrician will carry out a visual inspection of all connections, use thermal imaging or a clamp meter to identify hot spots, test insulation resistance to check for cable degradation, and assess whether your consumer unit needs repair or full replacement. Many older plastic-cased consumer units with outdated components now require replacement under current regulations.
