Why is my consumer unit main earth terminal loose?

A loose main earth terminal in your consumer unit is most commonly caused by a terminal screw that has worked loose over time due to thermal expansion and contraction, or was never tightened correctly at installation. This is a serious fault. Do not attempt to tighten it yourself. Turn off non-essential circuits and call a registered electrician immediately. A poor earth connection can prevent protective devices from operating correctly in a fault, creating a risk of electric shock or fire.

Your main earth terminal is one of the most important safety connections in your entire electrical installation. It is the central point where all the earthing conductors in your home meet, and it connects to the earth provided by your electricity distributor or to an earth electrode if you are on a TT system. If this terminal is loose, the earth path through your home may be unreliable, which means that if a fault develops in an appliance or wiring, the protective devices such as fuses or RCDs may not trip as quickly as they should. That puts you at risk of electric shock or fire.
What a loose earth terminal actually means in plain terms is this. Somewhere inside your consumer unit, the large green and yellow earth cable that connects to the incoming supply, along with the individual earth wires from each circuit, all land on a bar or terminal block. If the main screw or clamp holding that assembly in place is loose, the electrical contact is poor. A poor contact creates resistance. Resistance in an earth conductor is dangerous because in a fault condition the earth current may not be high enough to blow a fuse or trip a breaker in time.
What you can safely do yourself is very limited. You can visually inspect the consumer unit from the outside with the door open, without touching anything, and look to see if you can see obvious movement in a cable or a visibly loose fitting. Do not touch any terminals or cables. The busbars and incoming supply terminals inside a consumer unit can be live even when the main switch is turned off, because the incoming supply cable from the meter is always energised.
Signs that point to a loose earth terminal include a burning smell near the consumer unit, scorch marks around the terminal area, flickering lights or nuisance RCD trips, or the earth cable visibly moving when you look at it.
Who to call. You need a registered electrician from a competent person scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA. They can safely tighten the terminal, carry out insulation resistance and earth fault loop impedance tests, and issue an Electrical Installation Condition Report if needed. This is not a job to leave. Book it as urgent.
