Why does my RCD trip when it rains?

Quick answer

Rain-triggered RCD tripping usually means water is getting into an outdoor socket, light fitting, or underground cable, creating a leakage path to earth.

When it rains, water can get into outdoor sockets, garden light fittings, or buried cables and create a path for electricity to leak to earth. Your RCD detects this and trips for safety. The most common culprits are: outdoor sockets without weatherproof covers properly closed, garden lights with cracked or loose fittings, pond pumps or water features with damaged cables, or underground cable that has been damaged by digging. If your RCD only trips in wet weather, this is almost certainly an outdoor circuit. Switch off the outdoor circuit breaker and see if the RCD stays on — that confirms it. Call an electrician to find and repair the water ingress.
