Why do my lights keep flickering?

Quick answer

Usually a loose bulb, incompatible dimmer switch, or a loose connection. If it is more than one room, call an electrician.

Flickering lights are one of the most common electrical complaints. Start with the simplest cause — tighten the bulb in its fitting. If that does not help, the next most likely cause is a dimmer switch that is not compatible with LED bulbs. Old dimmer switches were designed for incandescent bulbs and do not work properly with LEDs, causing flicker or buzzing. If the flickering is in one fitting only, the fitting or its connections may be loose. If multiple lights flicker across the house, particularly when you use a large appliance like a kettle or washing machine, the cause could be a loose connection in the consumer unit or incoming supply. This needs an electrician.
