Why do I have voltage on my earth conductor?
Quick answer
Voltage on an earth conductor usually indicates a lost or high-resistance neutral (N-E voltage rise), a wiring fault such as neutral-earth reversal or cross-connection, or leakage current from connected equipment. Measure the voltage: under 10V AC at low load is often normal N-E rise on a long run; anything above that, or any DC voltage, needs investigation. Do not ignore it — a live earth is a serious shock and fire risk. Switch off affected circuits and call a qualified electrician immediately if you are unsure.

Voltage on My Earth Wire — What Does It Mean?
Finding voltage on an earth conductor can be alarming, and rightly so. The earth wire is supposed to sit at 0 V at all times. When it doesn't, something in your electrical installation is not working as it should.
What Could Be Causing It?
Lost or broken neutral — If the neutral (blue or black wire) has a poor connection or has broken, current can travel back through the earth instead. This is the most common and most dangerous cause.
Neutral-to-earth voltage rise — On long cable runs under load, a small voltage (usually under 5–10 V AC) can appear between neutral and earth. This is often normal but should still be investigated if unexplained.
Wiring mistake — A neutral and earth wire swapped at a socket, consumer unit, or light fitting will put mains voltage directly on the earth.
Leaking appliance — Some appliances allow a small amount of current (called leakage current) to flow to earth. A faulty appliance can raise earth voltage noticeably.
Cross-connection between circuits — Earth conductors from two different circuits sharing a connection point incorrectly can transfer voltage from one to the other.
What Should You Check Safely?
As a homeowner, do not probe inside consumer units or junction boxes. Here is what you can do safely:
Unplug all appliances on the affected circuit one by one and recheck the voltage — if it disappears when one item is unplugged, that appliance is the likely source.
Check if the voltage is present on multiple circuits — if it is, the fault is likely at the consumer unit or incoming supply.
Note the voltage reading — 1–5 V is different in severity to 50–230 V.
