A missing earth on a socket is most commonly caused by a disconnected or broken earth wire at the socket, consumer unit, or junction point. It can also result from old two-core wiring (pre-1960s installations lack an earth conductor entirely). Do not use the socket until the fault is investigated — an unearthed socket is a serious electric shock and fire risk. Have a qualified electrician inspect and test the circuit immediately.

What Does 'No Earth' on a Socket Mean?
Every modern UK socket outlet should have three connections: Live (brown/red), Neutral (blue/black), and Earth (green-and-yellow/bare copper). The earth wire is a vital safety conductor — if a fault develops inside an appliance, the earth provides a safe path for fault current to flow, tripping the breaker or fuse before it can electrocute you.
When your socket has no earth, that protection disappears entirely.
Why Has This Happened?
Common causes include:
Disconnected earth wire — the earth terminal screw at the back of the socket has become loose or was never connected properly
Broken earth wire — corrosion, rodent damage, or a poor joint in the cable has broken the earth conductor
Old two-core wiring — homes wired before roughly 1960 (and some later) used cables with only a live and neutral, so there is simply no earth wire present
DIY errors — a previous owner may have replaced a socket without reconnecting the earth
Corroded or painted-over earth at the consumer unit — the earth at the board may be loose or missing
How Would I Know?
A plug-in socket tester (available from DIY shops for around £5–10) will light up a warning pattern if the earth is missing
You may notice tingling from appliances or trips when using metal-bodied equipment
The socket may look perfectly normal from the outside
What Should You Do?
Stop using the socket immediately
Do not attempt to open the socket yourself unless you are confident and the circuit is isolated — working on live wiring is extremely dangerous
Plug a socket tester into nearby sockets to see if the issue is isolated or widespread
Call a Part P registered electrician to investigate, test, and repair the circuit
Is It Dangerous?
Yes — particularly if you use Class I appliances (metal-bodied kettles, washing machines, toasters, computers with metal cases). Without an earth, a fault inside the appliance could make the whole metal body live, creating a lethal shock risk. An RCD will offer some additional protection, but it cannot fully compensate for a missing earth.
