Quick answer
A prosumer is someone who both produces and consumes electricity. In the UK you can sell surplus solar or battery electricity back to the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
A prosumer is a producer-consumer — someone who generates their own electricity (usually from solar panels) and sells any surplus back to the national grid. In the UK, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires energy suppliers with more than 150,000 customers to offer a tariff for your exported electricity. Rates vary from 1p to 24p per kWh depending on your supplier and tariff. To register for SEG you need: an MCS-certified solar or battery installation, a smart meter that can measure export, and an account with an SEG-licensed supplier. You do not need to be with the same supplier for import and export. Octopus Energy, E.ON, and OVO currently offer competitive SEG rates.
