A split neutral fault is one of the more serious electrical faults that can affect a home, and it explains why multiple appliances can all stop working or get damaged at the same time, often without a single fuse blowing or a breaker tripping.
Here is what the neutral conductor actually does. Every circuit in your home has two main conductors: the live, which carries current to your appliances, and the neutral, which completes the circuit by returning that current. The neutral also acts as a voltage reference, keeping your supply stable at around 230 volts. If the neutral connection is broken or becomes very high resistance, that reference disappears.
When the neutral is lost or split, here is what can happen. Voltages on different circuits become unpredictable. Some appliances may see voltages well above 230 volts, sometimes approaching 400 volts. Others may see very low voltage or none at all. Lights might flicker or burn very brightly before failing. Motors in fridges, washing machines, and boilers can burn out. Sensitive electronics, smart TVs, computers, and routers can be destroyed almost instantly.
Where does this fault usually occur? The most common locations are a loose neutral terminal at the consumer unit main incomer, corrosion or damage in the meter tails, a fault in the service head supplied by your District Network Operator, or a problem on the DNO's supply cable itself, particularly common with older PME or TN-C-S supplies where the combined neutral and earth can corrode at joints underground.
What should you safely do right now?
1. Switch off your main consumer unit switch immediately.
2. Unplug valuable or sensitive appliances if it is safe to do so.
3. Do not investigate the meter, service head, or any supply cables yourself. These are the DNO's equipment and are live even with your main switch off.
4. Call a registered electrician to inspect the consumer unit wiring.
5. If the fault appears to be on the supply side, contact your DNO on their 24-hour emergency number.
Do not restore power until a qualified person has confirmed the fault is resolved and the installation is safe.
