What is a reversed live and neutral fault and how dangerous is it?

What Does a Reversed Live and Neutral Mean? In UK wiring, the live (brown) wire carries current to your appliance, and the neutral (blue) wire completes the circuit back to the supply. When these are swapped — either at a plug, socket, or junction box — the wiring is said to be polarity reversed. Why Is It Dangerous? Although many appliances will still appear to work normally with reversed polarity, the risks are serious: Switches no longer disconnect safely — a light switch or appliance switch will break the neutral, not the live. This leaves the lamp holder, heating element, or internal components live at all times, even when the switch is off. Shock risk during maintenance — if you change a light bulb or touch internal parts of a switched-off appliance, you could receive a fatal electric shock. RCD and fuse protection may be compromised — some protective devices rely on correct polarity to operate as intended. Older appliances with exposed metalwork may become live to the touch.
