What is a floating neutral and how do I fix it?

A floating neutral occurs when the neutral conductor loses its connection to earth reference, causing unpredictable and dangerous voltages across circuits. The most common cause is a broken or disconnected neutral at the consumer unit, meter tails, or supplier's cutout. Switch off at the main switch immediately if you suspect this fault, as voltages can rise dangerously on one phase. Do not attempt to investigate further yourself — this is a Category C1 emergency requiring a qualified electrician or your DNO if the fault is upstream of the meter.

What Is a Floating Neutral in Plain English?
Imagine your home's electrical system as a seesaw. The neutral wire is the pivot point that keeps everything balanced. If that pivot is lost — the neutral 'floats' — voltages across your circuits become unpredictable and potentially lethal.
What the neutral actually does:
It provides the return path for current in every circuit in your home
It is bonded to earth at the supply transformer, keeping it at roughly 0 volts
Without it, live voltages can appear on conductors you'd normally expect to be safe
Common signs you might have a floating neutral:
Lights flickering or dimming unexpectedly, especially when other appliances switch on
Some appliances running too fast or too bright, others too slow or dim
Electrical items failing or burning out in sequence
A burning smell near the consumer unit or meter
RCDs or MCBs tripping for no obvious reason
In split-load boards, one half of the house behaving differently to the other
What you can safely check yourself:
Look at your consumer unit for any obvious signs of burning, scorch marks, or a loose grey/blue neutral bar
Check whether the meter tails (the thick cables entering your consumer unit) look undamaged
Check if your neighbours on the same street are also having power issues — this may indicate a DNO (Distribution Network Operator) fault upstream
What you must NOT do:
Do not open the consumer unit or touch any wiring
Do not assume the fault is resolved because voltages seem normal — a floating neutral can be intermittent
Do not keep using appliances if you suspect this fault; motors and sensitive electronics can be damaged or catch fire
When to call for help:
If the fault appears to be at or before the meter, call your DNO immediately (free, 24/7) — in England this is often UK Power Networks, Northern Powergrid, or Western Power Distribution (now National Grid ESP)
If the fault is within your property wiring, call a registered electrician (NICEIC, NAPIT, or SELECT registered) as an emergency
