What electrical work can I do myself legally in the UK?

Quick answer

Homeowners in England can legally do most like-for-like replacements themselves. New circuits, kitchen and bathroom wiring, and consumer unit work require either a Part P electrician or notification to Building Control.

In England, you are legally allowed to do quite a bit of electrical work yourself — but the rules depend on what you're doing and where. What you CAN do without notification: replace a socket, switch, or light fitting like-for-like; replace a ceiling rose; fit a new fused connection unit in the same position; replace or repair a light fitting outside kitchens and bathrooms; mend a broken plug or change a fuse in a plug. What requires a Part P registered electrician OR notification to Building Control before you start: any new circuit; any work in a kitchen or bathroom; adding sockets, lights, or switches in a new position in a kitchen; outdoor wiring; consumer unit replacement. If in doubt: the safest approach is to use a Part P registered electrician (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA registered) — they self-certify the work and issue the paperwork without you needing to contact Building Control.
