What Causes an Electrical Fire in a Home?
Electrical fires start when heat builds up somewhere in your wiring system to the point where it ignites surrounding materials — timber joists, plasterboard, or insulation. Understanding the main causes helps you spot warning signs before a fire starts.
The Most Common Causes
Overloaded sockets and extension leads — Plugging too many appliances into one socket or daisy-chaining extension leads forces more current through wiring than it was designed to handle. Heat builds up and can ignite the plastic housing.
Faulty or ageing wiring — Homes wired before the 1970s often have rubber-insulated cables that become brittle with age. The insulation cracks, wires touch, and arcing occurs.
Loose electrical connections — A loose terminal in a socket, plug, or consumer unit creates resistance. Resistance generates heat, and over time that heat can reach ignition temperature.
Damaged or counterfeit appliances — Appliances without a UK safety mark (UKCA or BSI Kitemark) may have inadequate fuse protection or poor internal wiring.
DIY electrical work — Incorrectly installed wiring, oversized fuses, or bypassed protective devices remove the safeguards designed to prevent fires.
Faulty consumer units — Old rewirable fuse boards allow excessive current to flow before the fuse blows, providing inadequate protection.
Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Look for scorch marks or discolouration around sockets, switches, and plugs
Smell for a burning or fishy odour near sockets or the consumer unit — this often indicates overheating plastic
Check that plug fuses are the correct rating for the appliance (see the appliance manual)
Avoid overloading sockets — use the socket calculator method: total watts of all appliances should not exceed 3,000W per double socket
Replace any cracked, loose, or warm sockets immediately — stop using them until repaired
When to Call a Registered Electrician
Call an NICEIC or NAPIT registered electrician straight away if you notice:
Burning smells with no obvious source
Warm or discoloured faceplates
Circuits tripping frequently without explanation
Flickering lights throughout the house
A consumer unit that still uses rewirable fuses
