What is Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and is it available in the UK?

Quick answer

V2G allows your electric car to export electricity back to the grid or your home. It is available in the UK with compatible vehicles and chargers, mainly the Nissan Leaf and some newer models.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology uses your electric car as a giant battery — charging it when electricity is cheap and sending power back to the grid (or your home) when electricity is expensive. In the UK, V2G is still in early stages but is commercially available. Compatible vehicles include the Nissan Leaf (CHAdeMO connector), Nissan Ariya, and some Mitsubishi models. Most new EVs use CCS connectors which do not yet support V2G, though this is changing. V2G requires a special bidirectional charger (around £5,000–£8,000 installed) and a compatible EV. Trials by UK Power Networks, Ovo Energy, and Octopus have shown savings of £300–£700 per year for participants.
