How long does it take to charge an EV at home?

Quick answer

A 7.4kW home charger adds 25–30 miles per hour. A typical 60kWh EV takes 8–10 hours to fully charge from near-empty.

Charging times depend on two things: how powerful your charger is and the size of your car's battery. A standard 7.4kW home charger (the most common type) adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour. Most modern EVs have 50–100kWh batteries. Examples: Nissan Leaf (40kWh) — about 5–6 hours from nearly empty. Tesla Model 3 (75kWh) — about 10–11 hours. VW ID.4 (82kWh) — about 11–12 hours. In practice, you rarely charge from empty. If you plug in overnight every night, your car is effectively always topped up. A 3-pin socket is much slower — 2.3kW, adding only 8–10 miles per hour — which takes 20–30 hours for a full charge. This is why a dedicated home charger is worth installing if you drive regularly.
