Do I need planning permission for an EV charger?

Quick answer

In most cases, no — domestic EV chargers are permitted development in England and don't need planning permission, with a few exceptions.

🏠Homeowner view
Most homeowners in England can install an EV charger without planning permission — it falls under "permitted development" rights. The main exceptions are: you live in a listed building, a conservation area, a flat, or a house where permitted development rights have been removed by a planning condition. In these cases, you may need to apply for planning permission before installing. Your OZEV-authorised installer should be aware of these rules and advise you. Even without planning permission, all EV charger installations must still comply with Building Regulations (electrical safety, Part S for new builds) and must be notified to Building Control either by a Part P registered electrician or via Building Control application. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland the rules are slightly different — check with your local council if you're outside England.
