Can I run an EV charger on a 13-amp socket?

Quick answer

Technically yes, but it is strongly discouraged for regular use. A standard 13-amp socket (BS 1363) can power a Mode 2 'granny charger' cable at around 2.3 kW, adding roughly 8–10 miles of range per hour. However, sustained high-current draw risks overheating the socket, plug, and ring-main wiring. For daily EV charging, a dedicated 7 kW home wallbox on its own circuit, installed by an OZEV-registered electrician, is the safe and recommended solution. Never use a 13-amp socket with a damaged plug, worn socket, or extension lead.
