What are the electrical zones in a bathroom?

Quick answer

UK bathrooms are divided into zones 0, 1, and 2 based on proximity to water. Each zone requires different IP ratings and restricts what electrical equipment can be installed.

🏠Homeowner view

UK bathroom electrical regulations divide the room into zones to protect against electric shock near water. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray itself — only specially designed waterproof equipment rated IPX7 is permitted here. Zone 1 is the area directly above the bath or shower up to 2.25 metres high — only low-voltage (12V) equipment or specifically designed zone 1 fittings are allowed. Zone 2 is the area extending 600mm horizontally from the edge of zones 0 and 1 — equipment must be at least splash-proof (IPX4). Outside these zones, standard electrical equipment can be used, but all bathroom circuits must have RCD protection. Shaver sockets must be specially designed for bathrooms with an isolation transformer. Do not install standard socket outlets in a bathroom.
